Adventures in Babysitting

It's the beginning of new episodes after hiatus, so you know we had to have a recap at the beginning of the show. And, yay, we had some classic rock with REO Speedwagon's "Riding the Storm Out." We were reminded about saying bye-bye to Cass (sniffle), the nasty leviathans, and Bobby's final moment of writing down the mysterious numbers, saying, "Idjits," then dying (sniffle, sniffle).

When we launch into this episode, we see a guy in a diner watching out the window. Seriously, this dude (the actor, Ian Tracey) has been on everything I watch lately. Since he played bad guys on Sanctuary and Hell on Wheels, it was nice to see him play one of the good guys. He follows a woman out of the diner/truck stop, but she disappears between two semi trucks. When he turns back around, the waitress he'd just been talking to turns out to be a little more than a waitress. She's got herself some sharp-ass teeth and she bites him. When he crumples to the ground, she says, "That's for the crappy tip." Moral of the story: always tip your waitress well.

Next we see the words "Week One" and Sam and Dean just sitting in a room staring at nothing. We know they're still in shock over Bobby's death (I hate typing those words, btw). Then it's Week Two, and they're look at the mysterious numbers and trying to figure out what they can be. Week Three, Dean has constructed a clue board and Sam comes in and asks if they should call "Bobby's people" to let them know about his passing. But neither wants to be the one to do it. Sam answers a call from a young girl who sounds scared. Her dad told her to call Bobby if anything happened to him, so when Sam can't produce Bobby she hangs up on him. But Sam tracks Chrissy down and soon realizes that her father is a hunter and he's gone missing. Sam says he'll find her father and leaves.

Meanwhile, Dean has gone to find super computer nerd Frank to see why it's taking him so long to get back to him about the numbers. Frank's cleaned out his house, but he shows up pointing a gun at Dean in case he's a leviathan. Dean says he's not, but Frank says that, sure, he's not. Neither is Dick Roman or Gwyneth Paltrow. To end the standoff, they each cut themselves to prove they blood red blood instead of black goo. Frank takes Dean to a stashed RV where he's set up his computers. He says that the five numbers Bobby wrote down are a dead end, but he figured since Bobby was dying he didn't have time to write down all the numbers. He created a probability program and figured out that it was actually six numbers and that they were coordinates to a field in Wisconsin owned by Dick Roman's company.

When Sam calls to check in, Dean tells him what is going on. When Sam expresses concern about Dean and Frank heading there, Dean says, "Relax. It's a field, not the Death Star." :) Dean and Frank (by the way, I think Frank is hilarious and a necessary comedic edition in the absence of Bobby and Cass) pretend to be line workers to stake out the field, and the sight of Dean trying to operate a cherry picker was funny. As soon as he gets the picker up though, Frank tells him to get back down because there are cameras all over the place on the Roman property. Instead of setting up their own surveillance, Frank hacks into Roman's cameras and sees a woman who works for Roman and a surveying crew. They're going to build something on the property, but what we don't know. Goofy Frank also goes serious long enough to tell Dean that he wasn't always like he is now, but that he has to find a way to get through each day since he was 27 and came home to find his wife and kids gutted on the floor. Damn, everyone on this show has lost someone in a horrible way. Even Chrissy saw her mother killed.

Back in Sam-land, he thinks he's tracking one vetala. But since he doesn't know they work in pairs, he gets attacked and dragged back to their lair too. When he wakes up, there are lots of dead guys lying around but Chrissy's dad, Lee, is still hanging on. When Dean figures out what has likely happened, he goes to Chrissy's to find out where Sam might have gone. But Chrissy has destroyed the map and notes so that Dean has to take her with him. Enter some smack talk between Dean and a 14-year-old girl, LOL. When they finally find and follow the vetala back to their lair, Dean cuffs Chrissy to the steering wheel of the car and goes in. Luckily for him, she had not one but two lock picks and rushes in as he's getting his butt kicked. She pretends to get captured by one of the vetala, but then she stabs and kills her then cuts Sam's bonds. This gives Sam and and Dean the chance to kill the other vetala.

When we see Lee recovering in a hospital, the boys urge him to quit hunting so Chrissy can have a normal life. Lee asks if they've ever known anyone to quit the hunting life. Dean says no, that they all end up dead first. When Chrissy runs out of the hospital after Dean, she says they're giving up hunting. She also tells Dean he's "kind of amusing for an old guy." LOL.

What did you think of the episode? What about Frank? What do you think Dick and his leviathans are going to build in that field?

Did nobody pick up on what happens to Dean's beer in the scene where him and Sam are debating if they should help the girl or go find Frank? In the beginning of the scene it shows Dean opening a beer. Dean places the beer on the table beside him and continues to talk to Sam. A few minutes later Dean picks up the beer and it is completely empty so he tells Sam, "thanks for drinking all my beer, I just opened it". Well neither Sam nor Dean drank the beer. They kinda just subtly dropped that little gem in the show and it was never explained. I'm goin' to go out on a limb and say that a ghost drank it. I can't quite put my finger on who the ghost could be though. ;)

Oh and btw... while Sam was talking to Crissy and right before Dean's beer went missing, Dean walked over and picked up Bobby's old whiskey tin out of the bag the cell phone was in and poured some of it in his beer. Just wanted to make sure other folks saw this. Got me pretty hopeful that Bobby still has a role in the show.

I did, Justin! As soon as he looked at the empty beer bottle, I yelled Bobby! Looks like they're going slow and subtle with it, though. I wonder how long they'll play it out.

Great write-up, Trish! I loved Chrissy and would love to see her again, though my expectation is low. And I agree Framk is great.

Seems there was also a certain angel who had a taste for liquor as well. Or maybe I'm just being overly optimistic again.

I know this blog is for "supernatural sisters" and I'm by no means a sister but I found it while looking for info on the show. Me and all of my friends started watching supernatural a few episodes before Dean went to hell and have been hooked ever since. Since then I've recorded every rerun and seen all of them starting with episode #1. By far my favorite series ever and I will completely fall apart when the last episode is finally aired. I have hopes that they will follow Sam and Dean into their older years. I agree Pat, you know Cass could be back and "watching" the guys. I really hope Mishap is written back into the show. I was talking to my buddy and his wife last night about how it just wouldn't be the same without Cass from here on out. One thing good we can pull from Dick killing Bobby is it gives us a new level of hatred towards the Leviathan. Anyway glad to see so many out there who love the show as much as me. I've started staying in on Friday nights so I wont miss anything. If you guys know of a website where I can watch past shows let me know. I missed Bobby's death and the episode back in the fall when Joe is sent after Dean.

It's always possible, Pat!

Justin, we're just called the Supernatural Sisters because we're five women that run the blog. You don't have to be a sister to read us or comment! We want EVERYONE! :)

My story of discovery is similar, but I did find the show after season 1. I have a group of friends who get together to watch random episodes, and we usually watch the finale together because we're out of town the week it airs.

You're right about Dick killing Bobby. It would have been possible for Sam and Dean to give up on them otherwise, overwhelmed by the impossibility. Cas being destroyed by them wasn't enough incentive, because he took it on himself. But Bobby was more important to the boys. They'll never stop trying, now.

You can watch Bobby's episode on the CW website or Hulu for free. Jo's ("Defending Your Life") you can watch for $1.99 through iTunes or Amazon. I'm not aware of a free legal place to watch old episodes online (though after season 1, I watched it all a second time on YouTube, in pieces. :) )

Welcome to the blog!

Thanks Natalie! I'm glad I found you guys. I also think that foe the sake of drama, Cass didn't need to be present in this season due to his powers. If I witch can render the Leviathan helpless for a few days then I assume an angel can too. Therefore having Cass could help take them out too quickly. He could probably pull some strings and bring Bobby back, which is what I feel is a realistic option at the end of the season. Anyway thanks for the welcome y'all. I'm happy to be here.

I think Bobby is watching over the boys and I love Frank. His quips were just the thing to spar with Dean. Chrissy was awesome as well, loved her asshat comment at the end.

I miss Cass and can't wait til he comes back. He has to before the end of the season or I am going to be so disappointed.

Maybe Dick is building a hell gate or something. I wonder...

I agree about Frank's quips, Melissa. No idea what Dick could be building. Bobby obviously saw more in the plans than the location, and knew what they were doing. It had to be huge to get him so pissed off and afraid, considering what they've already been through. What's scarier than Lucifer and the apocalypse? Besides the Leviathans, that is?

I'm thinkin' that Dick might be building something to serve as a portal between purgatory and Earth. Maybe to free the other creatures and the leviathans that didn't make it out. Another force in his race to take over earth.
Having an entrance to purgatory will give Sam, Dean, and Frank a place to send them back when the time comes but who knows. It's going to be fun to see how all of this plays out with the leviathans, Bobby, and Cass. They've made this season very exciting now.

That sounds more than plausible to me! I'm eager to see how it plays out.

I caught the beer thing, but didn't make the ghost connection. Instead I was sitting there stewing over the fact that Bobby appeared to really be dead. Whew! I'm liking the Casper the grouchy ghost idea a lot more. :D

Awesome. Came here to ask if anyone had any thoughts on the disappearing beer, and got my answers. Thanks! Love the idea of a Casper-Bobby muttering "idjits" at the boys while making their beer disappear. And, maybe a scene down the road when the boys discover Casper-Bobby hanging around the house and ask why he didn't show earlier, and Bobby mutters, "Idjits. I was trying to signal you the whole time! Didn't you notice the disappearing beer?".
